The heat is an issue, for now I can open windows and use fans but by next summer I will have to do something about it. I'm actually contemplating cutting a hole in the basement floor (concrete) and digging down several feet to place a tubing coil that could be used to cool the cpu's directly with water blocks. That would require a manifold to distribute the coolant to all of the cpu's and possibly gpu's. That might be cheaper electric wise but would take money and time to implement. Wait a sec, I just realized I already have a hole in the floor for the sump, hmmmm. Anyway I have some time to contemplate the possibilities, and I can do all of the work myself. I know some folks in the heating/cooling business that could help design a system so I will maybe talk with them at some point. Another possibility is a small window ac just for the computer room or moving everything to the basement where it is cooler anyway... but damp in the spring. Lots of possibilities - Google is my friend :D

well good luck with that. it sounds like you'll have fun tackling that job. me, on the other hand, isn't. but i'm in an apartment for now, until around july of next year. and then i'll be moving to another apartment. and hopefully soon after that, a house. just depends on my job. but until i have a house, it seems my ac will be on all the time

Another pointless 666MB download for probably less than 1MB of actual update. Can Apple learn to patch its products more efficiently?

I wish! Have to download iPhone4, iPad 1 and iPad 2 updates, so roughly 2GB of data just for what is probably a few minor changes.

Innovation: just what happened to Apple's innovative spirit when it comes to computers? The latest Mac Pro was fitted into the existing (and way oversized) G5 case. The MacBook was disappointing in that - proportionally - Apple did not shrink it at all or make it lighter than its predecessor (a design which had been in existence for about four years). There are more things, but I really don't want to sound like a troll here...

Apple needs to come out with new computer models that are unlike anything else out there. What about a tiny, thin ultraportable? What about a smaller tower,
An ultra portable or headless tower is innovation? The world is full of them. On the other hand, Front Row, Boot Camp, built-in iSight, Mag-safe connector, mighty mouse, much more bang for the buck iMacs, laptops and MacPro's do not count. As I remember, this time last year almost everybody was complaining about "obsolete" G4's in laptops and the limited number of hard drive and optical drive slots on the PowerMacs. I guess solving those problems does not count.

iPods is the cash cow and what did Apple do about it? Well, colorful nanos are cool, but I prefer a white one anyways. I'd think iPod camp would have a lot more to complain about. Geez...

NO one uses iChat because no one uses AIM. Its all crappy MSN!

I use iChat with a Jabber ID to chat to my MSN buddies. I don't tend to send them files or audio chat with them so it's fine for just text.

Tried restoring and setting it up as new?

Nope. I'd rather they fixed the bug, thanks. :)

I realise this may well work, but it's a hassle and a half, so I'd rather avoid it if at all possible...

I wonder if this is part of the labels' strategy to take power away from iTunes.

The dropped calls are the dealbreaker. I love my iPhone but it just doesn't perform at anything approaching an acceptable level.

Missed calls. Dropped calls. Missing voicemails. 3 day late voicemails. There are consequences these days of having a communication device that behaves randomly. You trust it when you shouldn't and it costs you business and makes you look unreliable.

Most of this is ATT's fault, but frankly the phone has attributes that are Apple's fault, like the volume level. In any case it has to be a good phone first and it is not. The network is the phone, and the network sucks.

Hope I get enough on Ebay to buy an iPod touch.

Yay! Great range of updates considering the price hasn't changed. I've officially given upon ever seeing a 13" MBP so I'll be picking up the high end 15" very soon.

Slightly off-topic: does anyone have an opinion on getting software (in this case logic express) preinstalled? Is there any benefit or would it be better to just buy the app seperately?

    THIS!

Remember Back to the Mac. Let's gear up some Lion, iMac revision and other Maccentric rumors. Page 2 it or get a new 'iOS Nothing new to see here folks' tab.

Maybe I'll start a blog and call it Risky SuperNova. Then I can predict nonsense and get quoted every other week on MR.

cool thats probably it then, the -16.

the processor trick is with the dev tools. there's a prefpane where u can turn off individual cores, and turn off hyperthreading. too bad there's not a dev tool for overclocking ;)

Oh yeah, I remember that now, about something in dev tools, that would be really interesting to have oc tools as well.

3 months... Or more, we don't know, that's the problem. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S2, an outstanding phone(reviews say), will be in the market. Apple, wake up.

Too bad the phone will be on the market for 6 months without a single software update then release a new phone telling customers if they want bugs fixed they'll have to buy a new phone rather than expecting a free software update. The fact that people take seriously Samsung's mobile phones really shows what a legion of drones there are out there - if Samsung aren't abandoning their Android users at the earliest instance they're screwing up WP7 updates.

I'm 99% certain iPhone 5 is announced at WWDC. Doesn't make sense to go further out, especially with Android bringing up the rear in a big hurry.

By bringing up the rear you mean leading the pack now in sells and innovation, hardware*(No one can argue that all of the android phones in the iPhone 4's category all have better specs.) all android needs is a little polishing on the UI. This Year the iPhone will be playing catch up. iOS also has to dish out the features that the customers want.

    1. File system
    2. More personalization
    3. Widgets
    4. Better notifications
    5. Wifi tethering
    6. the most important of them all it must have a picture of me on it.

Line at Brea Mall is to Macy's, probably about 150-200 people here.

Any idea how fast these lines move? This'll be the first time I've camped out for a product.

    OMG  Wow.

I'll probably try to hit the local Walmart of BestBuy instead.

I'll say this one last time. Flash is not an app! It's a method of delivering content on a web site.

If there were not Flash applications, then Adobe would not have developed and released its Packager for iPhone (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/packagerforiphone/).

Flash is also a way to deliver video. The Skyfire App (http://skyfire.com/product/iphone) is a way for iOS users to view those legacy Flash videos. When sites update their video to be HTML compliant, bridging services like Skyfire will no longer be needed for that conversion.

Finally, as you note, Flash is also a way to deliver web content.

You cannot make iOS "apps" to replace a web page dude.

Why not? That sounds like the exact purpose of Adobe's new packager tool.

As long as there are Flash only web sites, there will be a demand for Flash plugins.

Users of the 120M+ iOS devices are doing just fine without Flash plugins.

As long as websites serve up some or all of their content solely through Flash, they will be shut out from users on those iOS devices. Adobe recognizes this shortcoming in Flash and is rapidly developing a Flash to HTML5 converter (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1039999):

Here's what Adobe blogged about that (http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/2010/10/adobe-demos-flash-to-html5-conversion-tool.html) after a demo at their Adobe MAX 2010 conference in October:

How could I create rich experiences that run on desktops (where Flash is the obvious, consistent (cross-browser/-platform) choice) and on iOS devices where Flash isnt allowed? Id have to create two versions of a everythingone Flash, and one HTML5*. Good luck getting clients to double their budgets, though, and yet they dont want richness cut in half.

So, the opportunity: Cut the cost of targeting multiple runtimes & well deliver real wins: more richness for clients, and a competitive advantage for customers. [...]

Adobe lives or dies by its ability to help customers solve real problems. That means putting pragmatism ahead of ideology.

Once a website has gone through the process of serving up HTML5, why bother serving up Flash to anybody? This tool will continue to lessen the need for Flash on the browser for everybody.

This Skyfire app is proof of that.

Not exactly. Skyfire is not optimal for iPhone users, because videos they request have to go through Skyfire's servers for conversion. It's also not a complete solution for websites, because only a fraction of the iOS users will purchase the Skyfire app. Skyfire functions as a bridging app to give websites access to iOS users until they convert their video inventory to HTML5.

I won't bother arguing anymore about the other things as it's a complete waste of my time.

    That would be good.

Ironically, Adobe's new conversion tools will accelerate the demise of Flash on the web.
