Why does it take a media storm for Apple to open up on an issue ? It would be so much better if they more forthcoming and frank befoe an issue snowballs.

As they said, it has been a week. It is not really there fault that the media instantly makes a storm out of every Apple issue.

if they are not tracking people then why have the feature? maybe the information is for someone else??... who knows but one thing is for sure its an invasion of privacy..... even if I do stay home all day and night.

It is clear from your reply you did not read the transcript or any thing else on this issue...

I'm with you. iDisk is a clunker and I never use it. Apple would be smart to just buy DropBox. It's perfect.

iDisk works fine for me and has better integration than Dropbox.

I'm not sure why people are all out of sorts with this increase. Basically it seems people are mad that it will cost them more to end a contract early? Is upgrading before the end of two years really that important?

Maybe I'm just odd, but two years with a product really isn't all that long.

In doing some research, I found out that the basic Pioneer DVR-111 series SuperDrives Apple uses (some G4/all G5/all Intel towers) have the hardware capability to do LabelFlash direct-to-disk-surface label burning with the compatible disks. LabelFlash is the NEC-originated competitor to LightScribe, does basically the same thing on LightScribe-compatible disks.
On the Windows side, there are lots of sites out there that talk about flashing the ROMs to enable the feature for certain revision letters & firmware versions of the DVR-111 drives, while other versions of the drive (DVR-111L) are already fully capable (no clue on the ones Apple shipped with the Macs -- I stopped paying attention when I found there were ZERO software apps to support it on the Mac side that I could find).

Personally, I would really like to see Apple provide the feature as an OS-bundled utility app or added-feature in an existing Apple burner app (like the one in the iLife bundle).

As of March '05, Roxio also said they were going to support LightScribe (and possibly LabelFlash) in their future Mac releases, but I didn't see any mention of it in the feature sets of Toast & Toast Titanium 6 & 7, both of which were either updated or released after that date. Theoretically, they could also support LightScribe (if licensed) to burn images into unused portions of the dataside (as could any other burner app), to create a label effect (see http://www.yamahamultimedia.com/yec/tech/discta2_01.asp for details on the technology).

The epson CD-printer solution seems a bit silly for my uses, if I have no other use for the printer, mostly because of the consumables costs (and, indeed, with a big HP laser color printer here, I have zero other use for the Epson and am not thrilled by their putty-style inks and subsequent print head maintenance/cleaning processes that waste a goodly chunk of the ink reservior).

As for the sharpie comments, I create CD's & DVD's for clients and would prefer to present a more "professional image" on the disks than hand-written solutions. I was printing color labels through my laser printer and setting them in (usually using Avery CD labels), but some of the clients, esp. those with very thin portables seemed to be having issues with the thicker disks as a result, so I went back to sharpies as a general rule. The ability to do LabelFlash disks with hardware I already own would be great...

    Cheers,
    =-= The CyberPoet

Like it was said in other forms (and also by myself), it was blown hugely out of proportion, and a week from now, no one will even care about it anymore.

But then all we'll have left is antenna-gate. :(

"Just wait for the Verizon iPhone 4 numbers!"
"Just wait for the White iPhone 4 numbers!"
"Just wait for the iPhone 4S numbers!"
"Just wait for the iPhone 5 numbers!"

I'm starting to see a pattern.

For all intents and purposes, the 4S is the same thing as the iPhone 5. On top of that, I don't think anyone speculated huge sales of the white iPhone 4. So, while you may see a pattern, it's only in the comments you pulled out of your ass; not due to any factual evidence.

    The phone totally ROCKS! howerver,

    One,
I am A GSM user but do not care for cingular. I was looking forward to this phone, but will not use cingular... so no phone for me. I would also like to take advantage of 3G since it is available in my area.

    Second,
What's up with Leopard... I would have like to have seen that and also been promised a release date on it... my G4 was slow when I bought it, but I wanted OS X. It's an awesome OS... I am waiting for leopard to be released before I get my next Mac.

Word is that this is a really really basic functionality intended for data and not meant to be any kind of HD video type of software.
This is however the first step to getting HD discs authored on the Mac.
Right now the only real HD authoring options each cost over $50,000 so if Apple is planning on getting an HD version of DVD Studio pro this would be a start in the right direction.

Kindle Free 3G + Wifi version... was only expecting the wifi version, and was pleasantly surprised. :)

Other than this... I got a safe and Blur for Xbox 360. Oh, and Santa had my full carry pistol permit delivered in the mail Christmas Eve! (hence the safe)

Overall, good, lean Christmas. I didn't get stuff I didn't need. So glad as to have not had my loved ones waste their money on unnecessary items.

This is an illogical comparison and does not give us any real information to go on.

    Why?

    They are comparing iOS Devices.

I don't think RIM and all the rest should be compared to iPad and iPod touch devices.

This is playing with the numbers.

Why the heck _wouldn't_ you count those? You can use apps across all the devices, which is where the power of the Apple ecosystem comes into play. Once the Apple TV can support apps, that will be counted too. Whether or not you can make a phone call on the device is absolutely 100% irrelevant. The ONLY thing that matters in these kind of numbers is whether or not you can run an application on it. That's where the benefit of market reach comes into play. More devices sold = more developers = more benefit to customers = more devices sold = more developers ... etc. It's a great little self-sustaining model.

Sounds like everything Apple just went through with Antenna-Gate and the White iPhone 4. It happens to everyone.

I don't think this is the case. RIMM is not doing well.

Unusual Price Movement Detected - (TSE: RIM.TO) (http://www.tickrwatch.com/2011/04/unusual-price-movement-detected-tse_29.html)
Posted by Eric Savoie at 3:30 PM

Shares of Research In Motion Limited (TSE: RIM) fell by 15.1% or $-8.13/share to $45.7. In the past year, the shares have traded as low as $44.94 and as high as $73.98. On average, 1956300 shares of RIM.TO exchange hands on a given day and today's volume is recorded at 8273998. The shares are currently trading below the 50-day and 200-day moving averages which indicates that the shares have been experiencing downward momemtum. The stock may bounce back to test the 200-day moving average. Thus, you may want to pay close attention for a move up to the $55.63 area but be careful because the stock may face selling pressure at this level.

I agree on the copying for own use. You should not be limited on something you have purchased. But you put 'profit' at the end of your 'list' that to me means you also sell the copies.

If he had just put "profit" that would be a fair judgemnt.

But that's not exactly what he said. The actual quote is:
    "3) ????? 4) PROFIT!"

That's different. It's an old joke. I guess you've never seen it before.

I've been thinking about that: remember when there were rumors of OS X delays because the Mac team was pulled onto the iOS team in order to get 3.0 out? I'm wondering if the opposite is happening now - the iOS team has been pulled onto the Lion team in order to get Lion ready for a summer launch.

    This begs another question.

I know Apple likes to have very agile teams that can be pulled into whichever project needs the most attention at the time, but if OS X is taking a hit because of iOS, iOS is taking a hit because of OS X, iWork hasnt been refreshed, let alone iWork for iOS, etc, etc, it sounds like Apple just needs more engineers.

I know rumors aren't good to use, but I'm sure there were pre-production parts for the iPhone4 showing up by this time last year, maybe the fact that there isn't gives more credibility to the next version coming later.

This time last year Mr. Powell left his iPhone 4 in a bar.
