i bet they had people there with MBA's from good schools running financial what if's and telling management to avoid digital because they will make less money due to not selling the film or anything other than the camera
Don't know who said it, but "if you don't cannibalise your products, someone else will". Which is exactly what happened to Kodak.
Greedy or not, if Apple and RIM are part of some patent infringement they have to pay up.
First, there is an "if" in that statement. Second, they wouldn't have to pay what Kodak demands, but actual damages. Third, Kodak has a market caps of $944 million, so if Apple and/or RIM thought there was any danger they have to pay $1bn, they would buy the company. Apparently they don't.

Omg with no laptop updates, I'd like to watch as Apple's laptop sales tumble. Already the Apple Store dropped their MacBook shipping days down to 3-5 days (nobody wants it).
Having visited my local Apple Store several times over the last two weeks (my PowerBook G4 was in for warranty repairs), I can safely say that I saw more MacBooks selling than any other computer... easily two MacBooks for every iMac that sold.
This is no surprise when you consider the price/performance ratio and the overall market shift toward mobile computing (not to mention back-to-school season).
If anything, I'd say it's a safe bet that Apple may be having trouble keeping up with demand.

yeah - to clarify, I mean racism in practice should be illegal. Holding racist views, however distasteful, should be legal as we should be free to hold our own opinions as long as we don't harm others by them.
It is the distinction between prejudice and discrimination.
I am not racist in mind or practice, for the record, and personally argue against anybody who is either!
So, how do you define "racism in practice"?
Is taking the seat next to a white over an asian racist?
How about going to a black cashier instead of a white one?

Ill agree with you on Lack of Education and Religious Extremism. Resentment, somewhat. I tend to think that if we just leave them the heck alone to do whatever they want and be as Shariah as they please we will see less terror attempts.
Terrorism typically arises from some sort of injustice. I think there is some truth to the clich "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter." But "leaving them alone" is somewhat problematic as long as we support multinational enterprise that seeks to extract maximum profit in every corner of the world. Even if the business s not based in America, America is the most prominent target.
I know it is not apples-to-apples, but I was wondering if anyone has seen the National Geographic on North Korea? One part that struck my nerve was at the end when the doctors were removing the bandages from the patients eyes, one of the North Koreans first thing to do was go praise a poster of Ill and promise to "Destroy the american scum with my new eyes" or something like that, despite the fact that much of the equipment used to complete the surgeries was American made and American funded IIRC.
Most likely, the government expects this sort of show of loyalty, when they are paying for your treatment. If you do not do this, you would probably labeled as seditiously ungrateful and they would find some way to make your life miserable.

I hope it fixes the USB connection to Canon cameras. They broke it with 10.4.7. I'm still booting from my portable backup drive when shooting tethered (looks really pro on location).
I dread the going-backwards-sytem-reinstall BS tho, so that's what I have been doing.

1. Real men ride Harleys.
And Mac users consider themselves as computer savy, LOL! They prefer a simple OS that a monkey could use. Now that's savy.
If a person is looking for the best overall experience, even if they lack technical skills, if not luck, it could be a very savvy decision. :)
*sigh* Okay I give up.
I don't think you are fearful and defensive. :)

Yeah but some states have increased or set taxes virtually on everything and still managed to overspend their budget *cough*California*cough*.
I've lived virtually my whole life in California and have no clue what you're talking about.
Perhaps you can source that.
As for balance, I'm a big believer in it. In my opinion an "balanced" solution includes tax increases as well as government cuts. Unfortunately, the republicans have fought tooth and nail against tax increases and have tried to balance a 26 billion dollar deficit with cuts. If only they embraced the notion of "balance".

Shame people had to spoil it but xD It was fun while it lasted :P Did Gareth fully install Leopard on his MBP?
Yeah, completed without a hitch. All in all took 20-25 minutes which I thought was rather impressive! I think I'm finally finished with getting Leopard on my Mac Pro and getting everything nice and dandy. Installing it on the iBook took *forever* but I was doing an upgrade on that one.

Why would Apple do what has failed all other manufactures during the time Apple's one model mantra have eaten sales from other manufactures?
So the iPod Nano and Shuffle are failures in the same context?

You are wrong.
Proven by Apples rising market share.;)
You cant keep saying that these ads are hurting apple if they keep selling more and more computers.
It makes no sense.:confused:Sure, they're selling more computers this quarter in spite of the ads.
They (the ads) have only been out, what, two months? Sales for the last quarter were in the bag before those commericals came out. Let's see how the next quarter is?

Picked up my pre-order today, so far so good! The main reason I exchanged for my Elite was to see if the new Xbox was quieter in RL, which is its by a huge factor. I've got MW2 installing at the mo, and from 3m away can barely discern a hum - no more turbine hall, huzzah!
With no disk in it really is whisper quiet. There's a shrill "beep" when you use the DVD drive eject button to confirm you've actually touched it, as it's not illuminated in anyway that's probably a good thing.
Only issue I had was that the HDD was not detected first time I switched it on. One removal and insertion later and alls good, 227GB usable space. I'll ditch all of the pre-installed stuff before I get around to installing all my go-to games, add-ons, saves etc.
Suits my Samsung HDTV to a tee, one happy owner here!

Just for those who thing this is a hand-slap kind of thing, I worked on a project where someone leaked an industrial design on a product and the FBI arrested them and they were facing 75 years in federal prison for it. This kind of stuff can get you more years than killing someone.
Depressing, but prolly true. Corporate muscle and lobbying power to protect their profits is more important than the taking of a life. Topsy-turvy, eh?:p

That article contains some errors. Shipping rates, for instance, are about the same as they were in 2008 and similar to 2002 so that is a red herring.
I would also question you as to why you think that China is an enemy? They appear to be more like a partner in a symbiotic relationship. You need each other.
Good points.
I think even though China is a legitimate partner, they are also a competitor and right now they seem to be doing better than the USA. Judging from their increased output, and also with quality going up on many items, if the public buys Chinese goods and keep on coming back, they deserve the business.
I don't see China as a military enemy like the other poster here does. China has far too much invested in the USA both in real estate/stocks, and in customers in the west to be stupid enough to pick a fight with us. Heck, China is slowly owning us so there's no fear of any military surprises there.
If anything, if the real cold war was about capitalism vs. communism, we are the winners since our capitalistic way of life has more than rubbed off on China and they stopped their isolationism and have to trade with the non-communist countries in order to survive. They have made their entire economy dependent on us as customers. The only pure communist country I can think of these days is North Korea and they are hanging on by a thread. So the conversion of China into what is in every way a capitalist nation is a trade I am willing to make if the cost is losing business here in the USA. I would hate to think if they were still run by Mao and viewed us as a military enemy. Also imagine what it would be like if they were dedicated communists like North Korea.

Jeez - last time we had page after page of arguments about this silly NON ISSUE.
Article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_External_Power_Supply)
So Apple is probably already compatible with its USBA to 30 pin adaptor cable, and if not then a supplied Micro USB to 30 pin would be fine.
ah, ok! thanks for pointing that out! allthough i'd preffer a micro usb port ;)

Previsualization is the most under rated aspect to photography, you're never going to be much of a photographer if you simply don't have a clear and concise vision of what you want the final print to come out like before you start shooting, this includes what post processing you're going to be doing.
Bingo! We have a winner!
Looking, but not seeing. Thinking, but not imagining.
Excellent point.

Now we are playing with power.
Same thing I was thinking. The ramifications of this.
However, one question that intrigues me is Europe's mini-USB adoption with cell devices. How will this factor in?

Update: Yesterday everything worked with my DVD drive - today everything is the same as before! It won't play some of my DVDs - how strange is that? It seems that the reset made the DVD drive accept DVDs again, but only for a limited time :-(
Does anybody else in this forum have the same problem? Is there any soft fix, or does my MBP have to get ripped apart and receive new parts?

Exactly! That's why the iMacs didn't get the Intel procssors until 7 months after the Mac Pros, right?
Well the reason for that is because Apple was waiting for the Xeon "Woodcrest" processors to put into the Mac Pro. A Core Duo in a Mac Pro...I don't think so.

I just bought a Presonus FireBox, but I'm having some problems with it.
I'm on a 2007 MacBook Pro, osx 10.5.8
I plug the unit into the wall, it powers up just fine, red light. I then plug the firewire cable from the Firebox into the FW 400 input on my mac. The light on the firebox goes blue, as though the connection has been established, but the computer doesn't recognize it. I've tried the PRAM/NVRAM reset and SMC reset to no avail.
Under system profiler>hardware, while the FireBox is plugged in, it says,
